Association Procedures

Membership in GVAA remains in effect as long as yearly dues are paid by February 28th. Members are encouraged to actively participate in Library shows, critiques, and outside exhibits offered by the GVAA.

Requirements for Entering all GVAA Juried Shows

  • Members may enter 1 or 2 pieces of art at an ingathering.
  • The entry fee for a Library show is $ 3 for one piece of artwork and $5 for two.
  • Artwork must be original work of the artist, not copied from another painting nor enhanced in any way by an instructor or other person.
  • Artwork must be sturdily framed and wired for hanging.
No frame may be smaller than 12 inches or larger than 42 inches.
  • All artwork on paper must be covered by glass or Plexiglas. Shrink-wrap is not acceptable.
  • Artwork content must be appropriate for hanging in a public facility.
  • Artwork may be hung only once in a juried Library show.
  • Craftworks, jewelry, stitchery, weaving, and sculpture cannot be accepted because there are no secure display cases.

Artists submitting art work must sign a liability waiver form. All reasonable care will be taken to protect the work. Insurance is the responsibility of the artist. Neither the Goleta Valley Art Association nor any public or private facility will be responsible for any loss.

Dues are $25 and paid on January 1 but for new members accepted after August 1, they are only $ 15 for the remaining year. Dues payments must be up to date for any member entering a show.

Sales of artwork from a Goleta Valley Library Show are expected to provide a 10% donation from the artist to the Friends of the Library # 687. For any sale from a GVAA event outside the Library, the artist should donate 10% to GVAA. If an outside venue charges a commission or percentage, then members are exempted from donating any percentage to GVAA.

Ingatherings

Ingatherings for Library shows are usually held on a Friday from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm in the Goleta Valley Library Multipurpose Room based on the schedule published in the GVAA Newsletter and on this website on the Show Schedule page. Artwork not selected for the show by the Judge must be picked up between 3:00 and 5:00 pm. Selected artwork will hang in the Multipurpose Room for the next 3-4 weeks. All shows at the Library are juried except for the December show Picassos for Peanuts. GVAA does not have a show at the Library during May or July.

Critiques for all juried shows are held in the Library on the last Wednesday of the month from 7:15 - 8:45 pm. After GVAA announcements, the Judge of the show speaks and offers constructive comments or gives a brief lesson.

Takedown of all artwork from the Library walls occurs immediately following the Critique but never before. See the Show Schedule page for takedown at other venues.

Fines of $5 are imposed on members who fail to pick up their artwork following the ingathering or critique. A fine of $ 10 will be imposed on any member that removes artwork from a Library show before the critique. All fines must be paid before entering another GVAA show at any location.
